Who was Dmitri Mendeleev?
Dmitri Mendeleev was a famous scientist best known for constructing the first periodic table. Born in Tobolsk, Siberia in 1834, he studied Science at St Petersburg and graduated in 1856. In 1863, he was appointed to a professorship and in 1866, he succeeded and was appointed Chair of the University.
He is best known for arranging the 63 known elements based on atomic mass into a table. He first presented this table which is known today as the periodic table, in 1869. The elements in Mendeleev's table were arranged in ascending order of atomic mass and then in groups according to similarities in the properties of the elements. Mendeleev also made predictions which were based on observed properties (experimental evidence). At the time, protons, neutrons and electrons had not been discovered.
Mendeleev died in 1907.
